Fans for Life: UCPGG and the S.F. Giants – AT&T Park – Sunday, May 20, 2012

On Sunday, May 20th, 2012, UCPGG will promote disability awareness with a “Fans for Life” appearance at the S.F. Giants Community Clubhouse during the Giants vs. the Oakland A’s game. In partnership with Sharon Forster, a five decade long Giants fan with cerebral palsy, UCPGG will recognize the Giants for their commitment to ensuring AT&T Park is accessible to all of their fans. This unique event will feature a short video that will be shown between innings, and “Fans for Life” wristbands will be given out to the first 10,000 Community Clubhouse visitors. Hope to see you at the game!

City of Berkeley’s Very Special Family Camp – Tuolumne Meadows – June 1st to 3rd, 2012

Berkeley Tuolumne Camp has been operated by the City of Berkeley since 1922, under a special use permit with the United States Forest Service. It is located on Highway 120, approximately 155 miles east of Berkeley, and 7 miles west of the entrance to Yosemite National Park. Driving time is only 45 minutes to Yosemite Valley and 95 minutes to Tuolumne Meadows. City of Berkeley staff will be on-site offering different activities, including a campfire with s’mores, game nights, and t-shirt screen printing. Many other recreation programs and activities will be available to families.

There is plenty of space left at the camp, so they have extended their registration deadline. Anyone interested in attending can return their registration form with payment to the City of Berkeley Recreation Division Office or contact Kim LeMay, RTC, CTRS (510.981.5147 or klemay@cityofberkeley.info) for more information.

Special Education Parent’s Group – Jack London Square, Oakland – Saturday, June 2, 2012 – 9:00 to 11:00 AM

POISE (Parents of Orinda Individuals in Special Education) and UCPGG would like to invite you to a meeting and enlist your support in developing a Special Education Parent Network (SEPNET). Most parents of special education children, regardless of where they live, have similar concerns and face many of the same challenges. There are 5 Special Education Local Plan Areas (SELPAs) representing 18 school districts in Alameda County and 4 SELPAs representing 17 school districts in Contra Costa County. By encouraging and facilitating the establishment of a parent support group network, we hope to provide parents with the resources and information they need to ensure that their child’s educational needs are met.

When: Saturday, June 2, 2012, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Registration is from 8:30-9:00 a.m. (A continental breakfast will be available during this time.)

Who: Special education parents who live in Alameda or Contra Costa County, teachers, administrators, and professionals working in the field of special education
Why: To establish a parent support group network

This introductory meeting will include:
• Brief presentations from existing support groups describing their structure, activities, and successes;
• Discussion, development, and discovery of common themes (purpose, goals, and objectives) relevant to all special education parents;
• An opportunity for you to describe and share specific programmatic and support needs within your district and/or SELPA;
• The ways UCPGG can support your efforts to develop or enhance your parent support group and facilitate information sharing throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties;
• Development of an action plan for establishing parent support groups and creating a network for sharing resources and information that can help everyone.

UCP Hoops Basketball Camp is a great opportunity for special needs youngsters, ages 6-18, to participate in athletics. Please come join us to learn some basketball fundamentals and team concepts in a supportive, positive, fun environment.

Scuba for Kids with Special Needs – Monterey Bay Aquarium – July 6-8, 2012

Head out to Monterey for this day of scuba diving for kids with special needs. Kids 8-14 years of age will get to suit up in complete dive gear, which includes a dry suit, gloves, booties, hood, mask, BCD, small air tank, and dive regulator. Special equipment is available for kids who can’t hold a regulator in their mouth. Each child gets to work with two certified volunteer divers from the aquarium. The volunteers teach the basics of scuba diving and then help the child to surface dive in open water in the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Great Tide Pool.

Project Search Internship Program

Project SEARCH offers yearlong, Monday through Friday internships for adults with developmental disabilities. These internships take place at a host business. Total workplace immersion facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration, and on-the-job training. The goal for each intern is to have exposure to a career in health or the public sector, to build their resume, and to attain competitive employment (at the host business site or within the community) using the skills they have acquired.

Ramping Up for Independence – Ed Roberts Campus, Berkeley – January to June 2012

A training series for independent living will take place at the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley from January through June 2012. Classes will meet once a month. Topics will include: postsecondary education, employment, housing/living support, social relationships, safety, and recreation. This series is for transition age youth with developmental disabilities and their parents.

Oakland Mayor’s Commission on Persons with Disabilities – City Hall, Oakland – 2nd Monday of Each Month – 1:00 p.m.

The MCPD meets as a full commission on the second Monday of each month from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm (except during the month of August and as rescheduled for city holidays).
